How It Works
The U.S. tax system is progressive, which means you don't pay a single flat rate on all your income. Instead, your income is divided into "chunks" or brackets, and each bracket is taxed at a different rate.
Marginal vs. Effective Rate: Your marginal tax rate is the highest bracket your last dollar of taxable income falls into. Your effective tax rate is the actual percentage of your total gross income that you pay in federal taxes (Total Tax / Gross Income). Your effective rate is always lower than your marginal rate.
Example: If you are single with $100,000 of taxable income, you are in the 22% marginal tax bracket. However, you don't pay 22% on the entire $100,000. You pay 10% on the first $11,600, 12% on the amount from $11,600 to $47,150, and 22% only on the amount above $47,150.
📋 Worked Example: Sarah's Tax Bracket
Sarah is Single and has an annual gross income of $75,000. She takes the 2024 standard deduction of $14,600.
| Calculation Step | Math | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Gross Income | $75,000 | |
| Standard Deduction | − $14,600 | |
| Taxable Income | $75,000 - $14,600 | $60,400 |
| 10% Bracket ($0 - $11,600) | 10% of $11,600 | $1,160.00 |
| 12% Bracket ($11,600 - $47,150) | 12% of $35,550 | $4,266.00 |
| 22% Bracket ($47,150 - $100,525) | 22% of $13,250 | $2,915.00 |
| Total Federal Tax | Sum of brackets | $8,341.00 |
💡 Key insight: Although Sarah is in the 22% marginal bracket, her total federal income tax is $8,341, which means her effective federal tax rate is only about 11.1% ($8,341 / $75,000).
